‘The object of meditation is to transform yourself, not to have good meditations.’ – Sangharakshita
From mindfulness apps to YouTube gurus, you can find meditations at a click. But how effective is that? It’ll get you started, perhaps, but you’ll soon hit a glass ceiling. You need to learn meditation from teachers that you can get to know, as part of an established tradition, and with community. You need to learn meditation in context.
By doing so, you will discover that meditation is not just something we do on our own, with our eyes closed. It’s about cultivating a new attitude to life. It’s about building a stronger sense of a shared life. It’s clear that the world needs people who can help to positively change it. To help change the world, you need to change yourself. You need to become the change you want to see.
To make progress on this path of transformation, we challenge you to:
- Meditate every day for two weeks
- Join three Meditation Masterclasses with Maitreyabandhu
- Come to the centre as much as you can
The LBC will support you to stay motivated with inspiring talks, video tutorials, yoga classes, and community events.
In person and online. All levels of experience are welcome and it's free – so do sign up online!
Events on offer
1. Saturday mornings: Yoga, Breakfast and Meditation Masterclass with Maitreyabandhu
Even once we’re meditating regularly, there is always more depth available. On these Saturdays we'll have a whole morning of practice, starting with Yoga first thing in the morning, followed by a shared breakfast in the Mandala cafe and then Maitreyabandhu, one of our most experienced teachers, will open up more of the vistas available to the committed meditator in his meditation masterclasses. Although we won't be introducing the basics, you don’t need to have meditated before the Challenge to come to these classes.

2. Morning meditations online
During the Challenge, kick-start every weekday in the LBC shrine room with a session of communal practice led by an experienced Buddhist practitioner. There will be teaching input and plenty of time to apply what’s taught in your own practice. If you're not able to make it in-person do join in online, and don't worry if you're not familiar with the practices we teach as they'll be introduced.

We'll also be running our Daytime Buddhism & Meditation class on Wednesday mornings, which include a guided meditation and then a talk on Buddhism.

4. Evening Classes
Remember that part of the Challenge is to come to the centre as much as you can. The evenings at the centre each have their own distinct flavour and feel, so why not come to a few to see which best suits you. Mondays are more focused on exploring teachings in depth. Tuesday and Wednesday focus more deeply on meditation here you'll also have an opportunity to be instructed to the fundamentals of the Mindfulness of Breathing and Metta Bhavana practices or, if you're familiar with them deepen your practice. Thursday hosts conversations between experienced Buddhist practitioners. Fridays are for ritual and hearing a story from the Buddhist traditions. As you'll see below some classes are both in-person and online, but if you're in London do come in person to most fully engage with our community.
